The material in this book should be completed in three or four semesters or equivalent and serves as a foundation for more advanced work in mathematics. This text is intended for use in Associate Degree programs as well as ABET (Accrediting Board for Engineering Technology) programs and BIT (Bachelor of Industrial Technology) programs.

    Chapters 1 and 2 provide the basic skills that are needed early in almost any technical program. Chapters 3 through 8 complete the basic algebraic foundation, and Chapters 9 through 13 include the trigonometry necessary for the technologies. Chapters 14 through 17 include some advanced topics needed for some programs. Chapter 18 addresses the basics of statistics for process control. Chapter 19 (analytic geometry) completes a comprehensive mathematics background needed in many programs; some programs include this chapter at the end of the first year while other programs include this chapter at the beginning of the introductory calculus. Chapters 20 through 22 present intuitive discussions about the limit and develop basic techniques and applications of differentiation. Chapters 23 through 25 develop basic integration concepts, some appropriate applications, and more complicated methods of integration. Chapter 26 presents partial derivatives and double integrals. Chapters 27 through 29 provide an introduction to series and differential equations with technical applications.

    We have included Appendix C on the basic graphing calculator and Appendix D on the advanced calculator so that faculty have the option of which, if any, graphing calculator is used in their course. Some graphing calculator uses are integrated into some of the examples in the text.

    A companion Instructor's Manual with solutions for selected odd-numbered exercises, answers for even-numbered exercises, and sample chapter tests and answers is available. TO THE STUDENT

    Mathematics provides the essential framework for and is the basic language of all the technologies. With this basic understanding of mathematics, you will be able to quickly understand your chosen field of study and then be able to independently pursue your own lifelong education.     I really should wait until I've finished the book, but I've already seen enough results that I can't procrastinate on this review!The message, tone and style won't be for everyone, but it works for those of us who need a heart-centered approach. Start reading, notice what resonates, and when a possible option occurs to you, just try it. That's how I have ended up with a system of planning documents that enabled me to make a full stir-fry dinner in the evening in the middle of a work week.I'm generally too exhausted to cook at night during the week, to the point that food spoils in the fridge because my good intentions to eat healthy just aren't enough. But an affirmation came to me while reading: "When I am crystal clear on the very next step, I can do anything." So I wrote everything down, followed the plan to the letter, and it worked. Doesn't sound like much, but trust me, this is revolutionary in my little corner of the world. The stir-fry was a successful test case, and now I'm working on other plans and things are starting to shift.I've read a lot of books on procrastination. This one is different.

    I'll tell you what. This book took me 5 months to get through, because, well- I procrastinate. I'm not even done with the book. My biggest struggle with it, has been just how much planning, thought and analysis he asks for to change the habits. Thats precisely why I procrastinate. Because I hate planning, thought and analysis. Asking me to, each week, create an 'unschedule' , or the dreaded 'look at your life in 3 days' which by the way took me 3 months to do, or 'do this or do that'. I mean really, that's not how procrastination works. I think, if you have a therapist, like he was to his clients, it would be an easier habit to dismantle, but the book... though I now understand that it's anxiety behind it, and what is behind that... the book... it was a drag and the exercises are not procrastinator friendly. I procrastinated them all myself.

    No matter what review you read or how you slice this book's content, you will gain enough insight to cover the cost, again - no matter what. Buy it. Don't hesitate - buy it. Or try to find it at the library, even the previous version will do. Steal it from a friend - just get this book asap!At first I hesitated to read the reviews, because "The Now Habit" just sounded so gimmicky to me. I shudder to think that I would have missed out on finally changing something so close to my core that I never realized it was the root of so much anxiety and lower quality of life.After reading reviews, I was well... desperate to buy this book. But being cheap and using the super saver option, I was told it would take 8-10 days to get here. So I immediately looked it up at the library, and they had a copy! So I raced down to the city library and signed it out. I was alarmed at the publish date... in the late 80's! Uggg, I had found the previous version. Weighing the investment of time (in reading a version of a self-help book 23 years old), I figured I should probably just read the older version and compare it to the newer version one it arrived.I was absolutely stunned that this book is perfectly timeless. Reading this previous version just enhanced how potent and accurate the concepts are in this book. I found myself thinking... I could have had a completely different life if I'd found this book all those years ago.When the new version arrived, I actually couldn't find any difference. There were probably some edits in there somewhere, but even the names and references in some of the charting tools were the same. So I (and you) would do perfectly as well finding that older version at the library. Again, I know I'm probably being annoying at this point - find ANY copy of this book!The Now Habit does focuses on the root - it deals with the REASONS we procrastinate. It approaches procrastination for what it is - a symptom of a past experience, an irrational fear, or a variety of other reasons. Finally I've found a book that fixes the real problem. The bad habits just melt away afterwards.I wish I could attach an emotion to my review, to explain how life changing this book was for me. I am a person who deals with concepts and practical wisdom. Dealing with symptoms or gimmicks will never work on me. I need to know what's at the root so that I can change my frame of mind from the ground up.I am so much happier now and enjoy my time. There's so much less anxiety in my life now - I've pretty much done all that I was procrastinating. I've never felt this way before, and I'm 40.If you still aren't convinced to buy, at least check the library. Borrow it, buy it, steal it... get this book!

    This book changed my life. I dont know why, maybe it was the timing, or the way I came by it. But I was struggling with writers block in a major way. I felt overwhelmed and very unhappy. I got the audiobook for this and it was like someone was describing my thoughts exactly as they were. And better than I could have. Just hearing his explanation of the cause of procrastination blew me away. It made so much sense. I had never heard it said the way he did. Im thankful and grateful for getting this.

    This book has really helped me stop beating myself up and get my Master's thesis done. I was tired of looking at the project but couldn't enjoy the rest of life because of the guilt of not having it finished. The author has a positive attitude about human nature and helped me to recognize some of my most anti-productive habits, while emphasizing that you don't develop these habits because you're a bad person! His explanation of why and how people procrastinate really rings true with my experience. It's great to know you are not alone in procrastination. He uses a lot of useful examples of procrastinators he's worked with, which includes quite a few graduate students. I've bought copies of it for my classmates who are in the same boat trying to get their theses done as well. When I hand final copies of my thesis in to my committee members, they are getting copies of this book, too, to pass on to future "stuck" students.I'm not big into eastern philosophy, but there is something about this book that helps you become more honest with yourself, face your problems, think more clearly, and perhaps even establish a better connection with your true self (if that makes any sense!). The book focuses on getting the work done, but in the process real personal growth happens.

    I really struggled with how to rate this book. The content itself is 5 stars, hands down. The artwork is amazing and there is a good amount of it. However i think there are a few areas that could have used some improvement.Physically, the book is pretty well made. Im a little concerned about the binding. As soon as i opened the cover the binding immediately felt flimsy. The pages open way too far, like you can see the glue undoing itself if you open the pages all the way. I was not suprised to see the other reviewers complaint about the binding completely falling apart. Otherwise, its pretty nice. The hardcover feels really good as i flip through the book and the pages are thick, glossy, and very vibrant - it shows off the artwork very well.As far as the content covered, its a good amount but i feel like there could have been more. I pre ordered this book a year and a half ago and when the release date passed i saw a post from blizzard explaining they were going to postpone it a full year to allow for more content coverage. Great! Sounds awesome, i can wait for a better product! Well, i feel a little jipped. There is a good amount of coverage of the core set and thats awesome, but the expansions are severely underwhelming. For example goblins vs gnomes released about 125 cards, the book only shows 20... This goes for all of the four or so expansions added to this book. I feel like they could have released the core set as its own book, and in that years time released a second book with more expansion coverage. Furthermore, the first 65 pages of the book describe the very early stages of the game - discussing how to create the look and layout of the game board, the card format, special effects, etc. Its cool and i found it interesting, but honestly i will only ever look at that section once or twice and never go back to it. They could definitely have condensed that section to allow more pages for cards. Those two complaints asside, the card art is wonderfully displayed. A lot of the cards get a full page, some even cover two pages. At the smallest, they fit two cards on a single page, which honestly after looking at these cards on a small tablet for the last few years - seems huge by comparison. There are so many subtle nuances in a lot of these cards that go unnoticed when playing on a small scale, really aweome to get a closer view. There is also a few cards where they have a velum sketch page overlaying the final version of the card - those are super cool. Theres also a decent amount of the promotional art - stuff they post on the website or game client that you only see briefly before the sets are released, its nice to have them on display here. My only other complaint is that on each page, the artist is attributed to their piece, however the card name is not listed. Not a big deal, but would be cool for reference purposes - maybe something to consider in later versions down the line.Overall, its an awesome book. I love the Blizzard art style and ive been a huge hearthstone fan since the game was released. Its wondeful to see the cards close up and as an artists its a great way to study the finer details and methods. Although it could use a little fine tuning, i would highly recommend this book, you wont be dissapointed! I hope they release more hearthstone art books in the future!

    Thats clearly manufacturer fault, book was packed in cellophane wrapping, so there was no chance i could notice that before opening.Except of that its a pretty solid thing. Was really excited to finally recieve it after placing order in 2017. Great printing and stuff. Several «vellum-like» pages with pencil drawings.If you are buying it as a present, check-up its faultiness.

    So good, if your a blizzard or hearthstone fan this is a must buy.

    Great Book, did not have any issues with the binding, loved how it shows the art from concept to finish and how the game was developed. I found out that there is a follow up book coming in 19 that will continue the art and history of the game. Can’t wait!

    I was surprised by how heavy the book was at first, But then I realized it’s because of the pages and quality of paper: it’s incredible! The illustrations are all over the place in full detail and color, and it seems that a lot of thought process went into making the book. As someone who initially started playing Hearthstone mainly because of its art direction, I find this book to be the PERFECT companion, And especially for those who appreciate the art behind the game or pure art in general! Very well done.5/5 recommended.

    I am a graduate of Fordham College - Rose Hill and am thus perhaps not the most dispassionate reviewer, but I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend this terrific biography of John Hughes. Hughes’ life is as remarkable a rags-to-robes story as one is likely to find. A young man of no particular scholastic inclination or accomplishment who nevertheless employed his instinctive people skills and, to borrow a wonderful word from another milieu, chutzpah, to become the preeminent Catholic prelate in America at a time when the church was under attack from every conceivable quarter, Hughes just happened to be the right man at the right time. The founder of what is now Fordham University (nee, St. John’s College) and both the spiritual and temporal father of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Hughes was a man to be reckoned with. But his considerable accomplishments came with a self-created stiff price. He was sufficiently difficult to deal with that the sign of the cross with which he accompanied his signature was interpreted by some as the dagger of the title. And it was no oversight that his life of service to the church was not rewarded with a cardinal’s cassock and ring; Rome quite frequently thought of him as much a liability as a blessing. But there is no question that he did more to advance the cause of the church, and especially its Irish adherents, in the nineteenth century (and beyond) than any other Catholic prelate. Finally, Author Loughery is the perfect teller of this tale, combining as he does both a deft writing hand and a congenital sensitivity for his subject matter. Excellent story well told.

Relevant today when considering nativism and immigration. Insight into the negative effects of Dagger John's battles, as well as his accomplishments.

    Entertaining as well as informative. The book gave a great overview of the times in which Hughes lived in addition to the biographical material. Prior to reading Dagger John, I had had a poor imagine of the bishop. Loughery gave me a clearer view, showing that John Hughes was an industrious and ambitious man who raised himself out of poverty to become a true American. Two thumbs up!!!

    This lengthy history of the establishment of the Catholic Church and school system in New York City manages to both inform and entertain. I found it to be a page turner and timely at that. Hughes, though he amassed great power and social standing, was a flawed human being. On the one hand, he fought hard for the Irish poor of New York in the mid 19th Century; he established schools, set up social services, hospitals--was close to the people, understood their needs. On the other hand, he courted the privileged society--Lincoln, Congress, traveled the Continent with the rich, had his own prejudices, including being anti-abolitionist. Yet he understood the needs of the people of New York and worked tirelessly for them. I believe he was a shepherd. Dagger John also illuminates the incredible tensions between the more established Protestants and the newly arrived Catholic poor. I would have liked more access to John Hughes' sermons and writings--more primary sources, more insights into the psyche of the man.

    I liked the insight the author had into the struggles the desperate Irish masses had to endure in the mid-eighteenth century in New York and the strength Hughes had to help them in a very hostile environment. What I disliked was the abundance of too many related stories. Very well worth reading for anyone - especially a fan of New York City history of the struggles of the Irish - the first massive wave on immigrants into the City.

    Parini (Bay of Arrows, LJ 8/83; English, Middlebury Coll.) writes an engaging biography of the quintessential California writer. Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize in 1962 for his exceptional and enduring book, The Grapes of Wrath (1940), along with his other numerous novels and short stories. His relatively uncomplicated life story is told plainly here, with some analysis of his influences and psychology. Steinbeck's inner life was characterized by co-existent self-belief and self-doubt: "He both wanted and feared recognition and approbation; he sought them, and when they appeared, he did his best to resist them." Parini based his research of this underrated author on interviews, as well as letters, diaries, and manuscripts, some unpublished. While biographer Jackson Benson's extensive The True Adventures of John Steinbeck (LJ 8/83) is more scholarly, this book is highly recommended for libraries not owning the British edition (Heinemann, 1994).

    Parini, himself a novelist as well as a literary scholar, is a wholehearted admirer of Steinbeck, whom he describes as a "writer to the bone." Not only did Steinbeck devote himself to his work with passion and discipline, but he also suffered from the deep anxiety and feelings of unworthiness that plague so many creative people. Sadly, his fears were all too often confirmed by an influential group of critics who savaged every book he published after the phenomenal success of The Grapes of Wrath in 1939. This critical scorn was diametrically opposed to Steinbeck's worldwide popularity, but Parini does suggest that Steinbeck would have benefited from a firmer editorial hand. At any rate, Steinbeck's struggles weren't confined to literature; he experienced plenty of conflict and pain on the familial and marital fronts as well. As Parini chronicles Steinbeck's youth, key friendships, marriages, travels, and the creation of each book, play, and film (Steinbeck loved writing scripts and making movies), he traces the evolution of Steinbeck's somewhat romantic and sentimental but unquestionably significant philosophy. In sum, Parini's finely wrought portrait of Steinbeck presents a quixotic, didactic, yet heroic figure fired with "moral outrage" and centered by a profound respect for nature and belief in the importance of stories.
